On Memorial Day, On-Duty Norwalk Professional Firefighters and Deputy Fire Marshals along with NFD Command Staff. Were joined by other off-duty NFD Local 830 members and their families at the annual City of Norwalk Memorial Day Parade & Services, to honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our nation and communities.
Following the parade, in-keeping with tradition. Both active duty and retired Local 830 members and their families enjoyed a BBQ together at NFD Station 3 in East Norwalk with the 34 On-Duty Firefighters that rotated through in between responding to emergencies throughout the City.
For those that may not know the history of Memorial Day.
In the years during and following the Civil War, communities in both the North and South, decorated soldiers' graves with floral honors on springtime "decoration days."
On May 5th, 1868, the Grand Army of the Republic, which was an organization of Union veterans led by Major General John A. Logan issued General Orders No. 11 or the "Memorial Day Act." This issuance formally established "Memorial Day" as a Decoration Day on which the nation would remember its war dead and decorate their graves with flowers.
From all of us at the City of Norwalk Professional Firefighters Local 830, we extend our deepest gratitude to our fallen heroes and to those who continue to serve our great nation 🇺🇸.
