On May 15th, the Fairfield County Hazmat Incident Response Team was requested as part of a statewide response to the Becton Dickinson and Company, in North Canaan for a large scale hazmat incident.

Numerous Norwalk Professional Firefighters have undergone extensive haz-mat training to become part of the Fairfield County Hazmat Incident Response Team. The City of Norwalk FD houses and maintains “Haz-Mat 2” as part of this regional team.

NFD Local 830 Deputy Chief Coppola, Lieutenant Lyons, Firefighter Delaney and Firefighter Chila responded with the team and NFD support vehicles such as the Prime Mover with the NFD mass Decon Trailer for the over 70 mile drive to the scene. Upon their arrival, NFD Local 830 firefighters worked alongside numerous agencies from around the state to mitigate any hazards and assist with the mass decontamination process for hundreds of people from the facility.
