April 29, 2025

City of Norwalk Professional Firefighters were dispatched to a building fire with reports of people possibly trapped at 30 Lexington Avenue in South Norwalk at 14:40hrs on Tuesday, April 29th.

Multiple NPD units in the area quickly arrived on scene, confirmed a working fire and began evacuating building occupants prior to fire department arrival. First arriving NFD Companies encountered smoke from the roof and upper floors of the multi-family occupancy. A 2nd alarm was transmitted due to NFD Firefighters encountering a failed hydrant on the block, this obstacle required an additional Engine Company to assist with establishing a positive water supply to support fire suppression operations.

With reports of possible occupants trapped and NFD companies encountering multiple rooms/apartments, a 3rd alarm was transmitted to bring in additional manpower to expedite searches of the building. All 34 on-duty NFD Local 830 Firefighters staffing 5 Engine Companies, 2 Ladder Companies, a Heavy Rescue Company, and Shift Commander operated on scene with additional command and support staff. Mutual Aid from the City of Stamford FD, Town of Westport FD, Town of New Canaan FD and Rowayton VFD was requested to provide in-station coverage during this incident.

This manpower and labor intensive incident required NFD firefighters to open up the walls and roof to expose and extinguish the fire that was located 3rd floor running along the knee walls and in the void spaces by utilizing multiple attack-lines while simultaneously searching all levels of the structure for any trapped occupants which yielded negative results. A total of 22 occupants have been displaced and are receiving assistance from the Red Cross. No injuries to either civilian or fire personal were reported. The NFD Fire Marshal’s Office is currently investigating the cause of the fire.

To date in 2025, Norwalk Professional Firefighters have already responded to over a dozen Working Structure Fires and 3 Multiple Alarm Fires in the City of Norwalk.
