| An explosion at a warehouse on Muller Avenue released dangerous vapors in a hazmat incident Thursday afternoon, according to local fire officials.
Four warehouse workers suffered possible inhalation injuries and were assessed by Norwalk emergency medical services, said Timothy Reardon, deputy chief for the Norwalk Fire Department. No firefighters reported injuries, Reardon said.
Firefighters responded to a warehouse on Muller Avenue at 2:48 p.m. Thursday for a report of an “explosion with chemical release,” according to Reardon. Online records and signs partially captured in photographs indicate the warehouse is owned by the company New Castle Building Products. The one-story structure housed building supplies, Reardon said.
By the time firefighters arrived at the warehouse, all workers had evacuated, according to Reardon.
“Explosive and toxic vapors” that had been emitted from a medium-sized tank in a storage room were located within the building, spurring efforts to mitigate the threat, Reardon said. In addition to the Norwalk Fire Department, the state Department of Energy and Environmental Conservation also responded to the scene, he said.
Firefighters brought the situation under control within two hours, according to Reardon. He said the team consisted of 15 personnel.
The incident is under investigation by the Norwalk fire marshal’s division and DEEP, Reardon said.
