| At approximately 11:12pm on Thursday October 9th.The City of Norwalk Fire Department responded to a reported MVA on Interstate 95 North between exits 16 and 17 with initial reports of an MVA involving a pickup truck vs a tractor trailer. While Car 2(Shift Commander), Engine Co. 3, Rescue Co. 2 and Tac 1 (Traffic Attenuator) were responding. Norwalk Combined 911 Dispatch updated all responding companies they were receiving calls stating the driver was pinned and would need to be extricated. NFD Companies arrived to find a pickup truck which had rear ended a tractor trailer, pinning the sole occupant of the pickup truck. The pickup had apparently driven into the back of the tractor trailer at full speed resulting in the entire front end of the pickup becoming completely wedged under the rear of the trailer. Using a combination of tools and equipment. The14 Norwalk Professional Firefighters operating on scene completed the manpower and labor intensive process of removing the door to the pickup while lifting the trailer in order to free the driver. Total time of extrication was 25 minutes. After the driver was removed and transported, NFD firefighters worked to lift the trailer and winch out the truck freeing it from under the trailer. Both vehicles would later be removed from the highway. The operator of the pick up truck was transported by Norwalk EMS to Norwalk Hospital. The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Connecticut State Police. |
