On Saturday, November 29th, at 14:26hrs, City of Norwalk Fire Department members responded to a structural fire in a three story multi-family dwelling at 13 Golden Hill St in the historic Golden Hill section of the City.

Upon arrival, first due crews from NFD Station 2 (Central) were met heavy smoke and fire showing from the first floor of a multi-family dwelling. As Engine Co. 2 was advancing a hoseline and Truck Co. 2 interior crew was beginning their search of the first floor, a sudden and severe change in fire conditions occurred, burning 5 Norwalk Professional Firefighters as they retreated to safety.

Additional crews of arriving NFD Local 830 Firefighters regrouped and reentered the structure to mount an aggressive interior attack to extinguish the fire that had spread to all floors of the home and search for potential victims while exterior crews from Truck Co. 2 and Truck Co. 1 performed vertical and horizontal ventilation.

The fire quickly escalated to a 3rd alarm which brought all 34 on-duty Norwalk Professional Firefighters to the scene with 5 Engine Companies, 2 Truck Companies, a Heavy Rescue Company, Shift Commander and additional Command Staff and support units.

Five firefighters were transported to Norwalk Hospital with various burn injuries and later released with two of the five firefighters receiving additional care at the Bridgeport Hospital Burn Unit. All occupants were able to safely evacuate with no injuries.
The structure was posted unfit for occupancy. Twelve occupants have been displaced and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the NFD Fire Marshal's Division.
